Engadget got word of something we might have all overlooked: Microsoft has lowered the price of its Zune HD line. On the official Microsoft Store and Zune Originals website, the 16GB Zune HD, which was previously $199.99 has been lowered by $30 to $169.99; similarly, the 32GB Zune HD is now the price of what the 16GB used to be at $199.99. The 64GB model remains the same at the (what now seems ridiculously overpriced) $349.99.
Of course, as previously mentioned, this is just on the official Microsoft websites. Third party retailers have been having a few discounts for a while now. Amazon still shows the old prices, but Best Buy does reflect the changes. (Our best bet? Go with the refurbished 16GB Zune HD at Best Buy for $120.)
There’s no telling whether the price drop is because of an imminent new model or because there’s no one buying Zune HDs anymore. With the release of Windows Phone 7, we’re betting on the latter. But there’s always hope.
