Accidental confirmation: Mango update name to be Windows Phone 7.5, due in September

If you were hoping for juicier news on what the official Mango update’s name would be come fall when it’s to debut, well you’re out of luck. It seems Microsoft just couldn’t come up with a sweeter name (okay, done with the puns).

Tech Crunch was lucky enough to snag a snapshot of Microsoft’s Imagine Cup, an initiative by the company to motivate students’ use of technology, Twitter profile stating winners of a recent contest would get phones with “Windows Phone 7.5 Mango.” The slip up by Imagine Cup seems to confirm who has come out the victor in debates about what Microsoft would officially name the update. The two options were Windows Phone 7.1 and Windows Phone 7.5.

Imagine Cup quickly deleted the Twitter update which all but confirms the information was truthful. Actually shocking, however, is the date they told their followers winners would get their hands on a Mango device: September. Some pegged Christmas as the date we’d see a Mango device in the US.

The update reads:

#ImagineCup finalists all receive Windows Phone 7.5 Mango Release!! Each student will get the phone by September!

Tech Crunch notes that the students could get pre-release or developers models.
