In Microsoft’s annual report to the United States Securities and Exchange Commision on Thursday, the company acknowledged that revenue for the Entertainment and Devices Division (EDD) in the fiscal year 2011 was $8.176 billion. That said, a whopping $8.107 billion came from Xbox alone, leaving some to question how much Windows Phone made from the remaining piece of the pie.
SeattlePI has done the rudimentary math for all and has come up with the difference between the total amount and how much was made off just Xbox. The difference can be seen as how much revenue Microsoft made off Windows Phone and their Windows Mobile platforms but truly encompasses the entire EDD — a division which includes Zune, Microsoft Surface, and other hardware and services.
The difference is $613 million in revenue.
Analysts and critics have been calling sales for Microsoft’s Windows Phone less than stellar and recent reports have shown that Windows Phone’s market share is not grandiose by any means. Revenue for Apple’s iPhone, one of Windows Phone’s main competitors, for the past quarter was more than $13 billion. Apple, however, makes its own hardware and software, unlike Microsoft who partners with hardware makers.
But the company is continuing to fully support the platform.
An update for the mobile operating system is expected in September, dubbed Windows Phone 7.5; Microsoft even partnered in a non-disclosed deal with Nokia early this year to distribute phones made by the manufacturer, also expected this Fall.
