Dirty Things on Your Phone? Clean It Up!

It seems that everyone has dirty things on their phones. In fact, phone’s are so becoming so dirty lately, someone had the great idea of inventing PhoneSoap. This is a device that charges your phone and eliminates all of the bacteria that you have transferred to it during the day. Whenever you handle your phone, you transfer all the nasty bacteria that is on your hand to your phone. When you put the phone in your pocket, the bacteria thrive as your pocket is just warm enough to keep them going. So when you pull the phone out of your pocket again, you add even more bacteria from your hand to the petri dish you call your phone. So obviously this PhoneSoap is a great idea!

It works by charging your phone through a standard charging plug encapsulated within the device. Then, when the device is closed, it shines UV-C light on the phone essentially eliminating 99.9% of all bacteria present. The short wavelength of light penetrates the bacteria and interrupts the DNA, essentially killing the bacteria all together. This is the method that hospitals use to sterilize their tools so that they may be reused again safely.

Currently, this device is in the “Kickstarter” phase. The company looking to develop this device further is seeking an $18,000 contribution to get started. As of now, they are about half way to their goal. Rewards for contributions include the book “nail it then scale it” which apparently inspired the group to set out and start their business, preorders of their device, and laser etched limited editions of PhoneSoap. Check out the PhoneSoap Kickstarter, and if you think you could use one of these, go ahead and contribute! They only get your money if and only if they reach their goal.

Microsoft isn’t nominated for worst company in America, but Xbox affiliates are.

Microsoft avoids being nominated for worst company in America.

The consumerist started a tournament (in theme of March Madness) where readers vote to decide who the worst company in America is. They had a selection of 32 well known companies like Wells Fargo, Apple, and Paypal.

Sony, known for the recently released PS Vita and their home console that competes with the Xbox 360, the Playstation 3, did get nominated.

Studies show that a lot of Xbox gamers spend their time watching Netflix on their 360′s instead of playing games, but despite that, Netflix still got nominated.

The biggest gaming-related name comes from one of the largest supporters of the Xbox brand,

Nokia Does Not Want You to Miss Another Call

Nokia has filed a patent for a magnetic vibrating tattoo that alerts you when you are getting a call. The patent is made of a material that is easily attachable to the skin and responds to changes in local magnetic fields and transmits a response that can be perceived by the user. This material is a ferromagnetic ink would be able sensitive to alternating magnetic fields like those capable of coming from iron, magnetite or neodymium. Such a tattoo could vibrate with different pulses for different people calling you, just like how you would set up different ring tones to let you know ahead of time who is calling. Obviously, this is an outrageous length to go to for the love of your phone, but the unfortunate part of this idea is that we all know people who would be willing to have such a thing done. The guy in this video did something crazy like this, and I’m sure he’d be one of the first in line to get this material etched into his skin. While this does seem a bit outrageous, there are some proposed alternatives that seem a little more sane. Stamps or sprays made of the same material would get the job done just as well, or even jewelry such as rings or necklaces or bracelets. I like the idea of patches or stickers that you can remove and throw away or store again for later use. It would even be possible for this technology to even reach outside of phone technology and into gaming. Instead of a vibrating controller we could have bands around our arms or legs or even vests that vibrate as a result of a response to an event within the game. This technology would also be perfect for industrial safety purposes. For workers in dangerous environments where toxic chemicals or radioactive materials are present, the vibration could alert them that they are in danger and reduce the number of accidents in the work place. While permanently tattooing your body so that you can stay on top of who wants to contact you seems a bit absurd, there are temporary ways of deploying this technology and for even better purposes as well.

Let us know with a comment below how far you would be willing to go to make sure you never missed a phone call.

Nokia Seeking to Change the Industry

Nokia is looking to put on their boxing gloves and duke it out head to head with Apple and their iPhone. Nokia’s head of design Marko Ahtisaari told news sources that they’ve got something under wraps that will make the current generation of phones seem “dated”. He personaly took swipes at the iPhone, by pointing out that the user interface is “poorly designed” and often “convoluted.” He said this in the context of how closed the iPhone is by its lack of internal user control. When asked about Android, he referenced a similar concept when it comes to developmental control, but referred to one working with an android as only being able to “rearrange the furniture.” Marko wouldn’t comment on the specifics of their new design, but he said it will feature some breakthrough technologies that don’t require the user to interact through a touchscreen to operate it. Whether it will host a Siri voice command style or a motion controlled gesture inputs like a Kinect or something completely new all together, it is obvious that Nokia sees the only way to the top is through a complete game changer of a device. Apple reinvented the smart phone industry several years ago with the iPhone, and maybe Nokia is gearing up to change the industry yet again. We will keep you posted as further developments are released.

Leave us a comment below and let us know what you think this game changing technology could be!

Next Generation Xbox to not Include Disk Drive

Rumors are resurfacing that the Next Generation of Xbox gaming will not have a disk drive. MCV is reporting that Microsoft is giving developers the heads up that they may not need to put their future works of art what is slowly becoming the next dying media: the compact disk. This presents a challenge to the way that we have been gaming for nearly the past 20 years. If it is decided that all future content may only be procured via an internet connection, trips to game stop could disappear all together. While this seems to be a deal breaker for future game shops and game delivery services, and not so much for the casual consumer, it is; the concept of swapping and borrowing games, a tradition as old has the Atari 2600, would disappear all together. The Xbox 360 is very good at downloading games and content from the internet and we expect the next system to be even more proficient. We run into trouble really quickly when we begin downloading games like RAGE, which requires about 25 GB of hard drive space. If nextbox plans to house a solid state hard drive, adequate hard drive space will be very expensive, even a year from now. Speaking of RAGE, a current Xbox generation video game, the lack of a disk drive will make playing your old Xbox 360 games a bit of a challenge as well. I don’t believe that complete non-backwards-compatibility would cause riots on the street, but requiring a purchase and download of a game that one already owns will be very frustrating to gamers who love their current collection of video games. Building the next generation of Xbox gaming doesn’t have to forego tangible media all together even if it doesn’t have a disk drive. USB or SD/Micro SD would also serve as the perfect way to preserve all the aspects of disk gaming that we’ve enjoyed for the past several years. The idea of downloading a game or picking up an SD card at your local store does give some promise that the cost of video games will decrease due to such advances. Because you’d need less packaging, or even no packaging at all, producing and distributing games would be quite a bit cheaper. However, I do not see anyone lowering the $60 standard set by the current generation of games. Where additional profit is available, additional profit will be earned.

Lacking a disk drive has impacts more far reaching than the video game market. Those looking forward to a blu-ray xbox will again be sadly disappointed and many may look toward other consoles like the PlayStation, which has kept a solid track record of keeping up with media demands of the consumer. The people who do stick with the Xbox and wish to have the Blu-Ray expereince will have a different predicament: overheating. Now this may get a little abstract here, so stick with me. Those who have been holding off to buy a Blu-ray player because they are still pretty pricey will be disappointed and eventually go out and buy one. Every year they get a bit cheaper, and a bit smaller. By the time they are cheap enough to become a part of 99% of households, they should be quite tiny. Tiny is not a feature that is commonly found in new Xboxes, a trend that began at its inception. This means, for the casual player who does not devote much space to gaming will rest their Blu- Ray player on top of their new Xbox because such an arrangement is more aesthetically pleasing. While Microsoft has become rather good at repairing and preventing such overheating, they shouldn’t let their guard down. There should be additional precautions taken with its design to ensure that the red ringed tragedy is a ghost of Xbox past and that the nextbox will not overheat no matter how the gamer decides to store it.

One simple solution may actually come from the portable PC market. Many laptop manufactures have begun making full sized laptops without disk drives. Thanks to the iPad, actual computer manufacturers have found themselves scrambling to create devices that are even more portable than before to stay competitive in what is becoming a fracturing consumer base and leaving out some hardware to save space is becoming the norm. If one were to buy a Windows 7 ultra-portable notebook, one without a disk drive, it would quickly become evident that simple tasks such as upgrading the PC or playing memory intense games would be very difficult. The solution, however, is very easily solvable with an external USB disk drive. These have become relatively cheap and compact so stowing them in a computer bag or hiding them in a drawer in your desk is not such a problem. While an Xbox, nearly a PC itself, could have all of these previous problems remedied with the addition an external disk drive of its own. Following past trends however, a company that makes the Xbox would find it more profitable to not make it compatible with 3rd party external disk drives and instead feature an exclusive rendition of the same technology. A normally $20 disk drive with the word “Xbox” stamped on it is easily has a $40 to $50 price tag. At the end of the day, while the manufacturer goes the spoils, the consumers will end up on the bottom. The system will cost more, be less effective, and lack the features that we all expect out of our $400+ game consoles.

When the bearer of this news, MCV, contacted Microsoft, they had this to say: “Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend its lifecycle like introducing the world to controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention. Beyond that we do not comment on rumors or speculation.” While this statement seems standard, threatening to “defy the lifecycle convention” leads me to believe that we have some solid information on our hands. There are many advantages and disadvantages to having an on board disk drive on a console. Feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think. Since we are the ones who will be playing on this new console, we need to get our voices out in the public so that they may be heard. So lets get to commenting!

Microsoft Upset Over Onlive’s Office Services

Onlive is a cloud gaming company that streams games to its home console. Recently, the company has been branching out its services to mobile devices, such as tablets and smartphones. One of these expansions brought a Onlive Windows Desktop service to iPads and just recently, Android tablets as well. Along with this expansion came cloud versions of several Microsoft Office programs.

Microsoft has now taken note of this service for iPads and Android tablets. Joe Matz, corporate vice president of worldwide licensing and pricing at Microsoft, had this to say in a blog post: “We are actively engaged with OnLive with the hope of bringing them into a properly licensed scenario, and we are committed to seeing this issue is resolved,”. Microsoft goes on to say that their License Agreement “does not support delivery of Windows 7 as a hosted client or provide the ability to access Office as a service through Windows 7. Office may only be provided as a service if it is hosted on Windows Server and Remote Desktop Services.”

Onlive has yet to respond to the accusations in the Microsoft Blog Post. We will keep you posted on any updates.

Do you think Onlive has a right to stream Microsoft services to other devices, or does Onlive need the official nod from Microsoft? Let us know in the comments section below. Don’t forget to add us on Facebook and Twitter.

Fable: Heroes revealed, boggles minds.

A shocking twist in the long road of taking the Fable franchise to places fans never really asked for, Microsoft has decided that making a quasi-on rails wasn’t enough and is set to reveal a Fable with a dramatically different art style and game play that is different as well.

Xbox.com is listing the game for Xbox Live Arcade. Microsoft’s product description for Fable Heroes:

Fable Heroes is a fresh spin on the beloved Fable franchise in which up to 4 players play both cooperatively and competitively in this hack-and-slash adventure. Work together as heroes of Albion to defeat familiar foes and new enemies while collecting as many gold coins as possible to unlock upgrades, characters, and items in both this game and Fable: The Journey for Kinect for Xbox 360.

The gaming community around the internet is reacting to this in a wide variety of ways. The game itself looks to mesh the simplicity of Fable’s renowned combat with some sort of Mario Party four player twist.

This reveal brings up the question, why couldn’t Microsoft simply make this a new IP? Nintendo is praised for being able to insert Mario and his universe of interesting characters into various genres like RPGs (Paper Mario), racing games (Mario Kart), and match three puzzle games (Dr. Mario) among others. But, even with that in mind, don’t out that Fable: The Journey and Fable: Heroes could be awesome in their own ways.

However, Microsoft’s reliance on Halo, Forza, Fable seems to be getting to a lot of gamers over this past year. There is nothing wrong with making new installments in those acclaimed series, but with this Fable spin off being so different, you have wonder why they couldn’t have made a new IP designed around being a party game like this appears to be.

The game is apparently going to be fully revealed in at the Game Developer’s Conference and it is being developed by Lionhead themselves. What are your thoughts on this? Shocked? Happy? Did I under estimate the demand for a Fable/Mario Party mash up and have your dreams just come true? Well, let us know in the comments and enjoy these screenshots!

Will Sony Make A Windows Phone?

Will Sony make a Windows Phone? That is the big rumor that has been going around lately. Various new sites speculated that Sony would reveal a Windows Phone at MWC, but that did not happen. Instead, Sony revealed a couple of Android phones and went on to talk about its features. Even though Sony has not declared that they are working towards delivering a Windows Phone, I believe it is inevitable.

Sony was one of the first OEM’s to get on board the Windows Phone band wagon by manufacturing a prototype Windows Phone device. Before the official launch of Windows Phone, Sony backed out because of one reason, Xbox. As Windows Phone users know, Xbox has a huge presence on Windows Phones and Microsoft makes it mandatory that it is bundled with the operating system itself. Sony has its own gaming platform to support through its Sony Computer Entertainment division, which houses the Playstation team. Had Xbox not been present in the OS, we would have seen Sony’s Xperia line of phones running Windows Phone OS. Heck, we might have even seen Sony Xperia Play that allows for classic Playstation one gaming.

Prototype Sony Windows Phone

Although Sony was reluctant to make a Windows Phone back then, Sony might not have a choice to be so anymore. Now that Windows 8 has been revealed, critics are giving the new reboot praises for its features and innovation. One of the main features of Windows 8 is Xbox gaming. From what we have seen from the Consumer Preview, Windows 8 will rely heavily on Xbox for gaming and Microsoft will also make it mandatory to have it bundled. Where will Sony turn to for it’s Vaio laptops? Unlike the mobile space, the dominant force in computing is Windows. Sony has no choice but to build its hardware with Windows 8, meaning it has no choice but to put up with Xbox.

Sony must have seen this coming, as Sony has been changing drastically through the last year and making bold decisions. One of them is the fact that Sony has been announcing publicly that their PlayStation suit will cross platforms. Rumors have recently pointed toward HTC Android phones being integrated with the PlayStation Suit. Sony knows that PlayStation can not reach the masses if it is contained in its Xperia phones. Windows Phone allows for Xbox to reach any phone, further increasing its popularity. Sony keeps its divisions independent and since its SCE division is licensing PlayStation towards other OEMs, why should the Sony Mobile Communications division care if Windows Phones come with Xbox, especially since its Computer division will be making hardware for Windows 8, that also has Xbox bundled? Sony has hinted in the past at working with other mobile operating systems if they see the potential benefits. If all of that does not convince you, then take a listen to this. Microsoft is rumored to be in talks with Sony’s Television division to incorporate Microsoft’s Kinect technology into Sony’s TVs.

Xbox Companion App on Windows 8

So what if Sony does build hardware for Windows Phone? If Sony does indeed build a Windows Phone, I wouldn’t be surprised if PlayStation is involved some way or another. As I recall, OEMs can build hubs of their own like HTC’s hub which presents users to the HTC Sense UI. Sony has the chance to build some sort of PlayStation Store within their hub if they want. Sony could also present their PlayStation Suite to Windows 8, which would be completely logical. There are many PC gamers out there and Sony can use Windows 8 to reach millions of people around the world. The ball of course is in Sony’s court, and we will keep a close eye on them here at Zunited.

Do you guys believe there will be a Sony Windows Phone anytime soon?

Next Xbox All But Confirmed

A Crytek developer, Sean Tracey, has announced publicly on his Twitter account that he was at an Xbox 3 (codename Durango) event at London. The tweet has now been deleted but rest assured nothing can be hidden on the internet thanks to this picture we found. What’s really fascinating is that there is a whole summit going on for this “Durango” event ensuring that the next Xbox will have plenty of titles to choose from. Like Steve Ballmer would say “Developers Developers Developers”.

VideoGamer published an article last year on the possibility of Crytek making Timesplitters 4 for the next generation Xbox console. The rumor was shot down by Crytek themselves. The latest tweet by Sean Tracy could signify that TimeSplitters could indeed be making a comeback to the consoles or perhaps Homefront given that Crytek UK is working on it.

The next Xbox will utilize the Direct X 11 APIs which by coincidence is exactly what Lionhead studios is using in their next game. A job posting reveals that Lionhead studios is looking for a highly skilled Lead Engine Programmer. Knowledge of the Direct 3D 11 technology is a mandatory factor in getting the position. Do you see the connection, if not think about this. Lionhead Studios was acquired by Microsoft in the year 2006 tying them down to the Microsoft ecosystem. Sure they could be building a PC game but that is not Lionhead’s main focus. They usually deliver Xbox titles. Looks like there just might be a Fable 4 in the works for the next Xbox.

“Durango” is the latest codename given to the next Xbox. It joins the already established Xbox Next, Xbox Loop, and the community’s favorite, Xbox 720. It has been rumored that the next Xbox will use a touch screen controller as well as a new Kinect. How that will work we have no idea, but it sounds like Microsoft is going to have some pretty impressive piece of tech to show off.

Update: Looks as though Sean Tracy’s Twitter account no longer exists.

What are your guys expectations of the new Xbox console? Do you think it will really have a touch screen controller? Will the new console become self aware and turn into Skynet? Leave a comment below with your answer.
